Probiotic Questions

What are probiotics?

We have ten times more bacteria in our body than we do cells. Probiotics are friendly bacteria that we get in supplemental form or through fermented foods. When we consume them, they become part of our body’s community of bacteria. Probiotics have a number of documented health benefits, including gastrointestinal health, immune health, urogenital health, and mood support.

What are prebiotics?

Since probiotics are living cells, they need a source of fuel or food. Prebiotics are that food. They are plant-based sugars, often in the form of soluble fiber. Prebiotics are also available in supplemental form, often as inulin or fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS).

If I already have bacteria in my body, why do I need a supplement?

Everybody has bacteria in their body; it’s just a matter of what kind. In today’s culture, many people don’t have enough of the good bacteria. A number of things can tip our microbiome into an unhealthy balance: a diet that contains too many processed or convenience foods, antibiotic use, chlorinated water, and stress, to name a few. It’s important to get enough of the friendly strains in order to restore the proper balance of gut flora and support optimum health and wellbeing.

What are benefits of taking probiotics?

Probiotics will replenish the friendly bacteria in your gut. Gut bacteria interacts with your body’s own cells, and has numerous benefits. Friendly bacteria can change the gut ecology, thus balancing the microflora and crowding out unwanted microbes. Probiotics can help to normalize digestion, thus improving absorption of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. Probiotics are involved in your body’s own cell signaling, and promote proper immune function and mood-supporting neurotransmitter activity.

What makes biolever® probiotics unique?

The probiotic strains used in Biolever® formulas have clinical studies that support their use. Each formula is targeted for specific health goals. We also use Bio-Support™ and Probiocap®, two technologies that ensure the delicate cultures survive the acid environment of the stomach and reach the intestines, where they are released. Probiocap® also helps protect the probiotics from heat and compression.

How often should I take probiotic supplement?

Unless you are eating a perfect diet filled with plenty of fiber and fermented foods containing a diverse array of bacterial strains, you should consume probiotics daily. This ensures you are constantly replenishing the population of beneficial bacteria. If you take probiotics for a short period of time, and then stop, the good bacteria can begin to diminish along with the health benefits.

Despite the fact that the benefits of probiotics have been known for quite some time, there is no official recommended daily intake. From a practical point of view, it depends on the strain (or strains) of bacteria and your health goals. There is a wide range that delivers health benefits, from as little as 500 million CFU to 100 billion CFU per day. Choose a probiotic from a reputable company; you want to have confidence that the recommended daily dose stated on the label is backed by clinical research.

Will Biiolever® probiotics cause any side effects?

Side effects are very rare. In pre-market testing, fewer than one person out of 100 experienced any side effects. Those reporting side effects mostly reported experiencing excess gas. This can be addressed by stopping the probiotic for a few days, and then taking half a dose for a short period of time before working up to a full daily recommended dose.

Do Biolever® probiotics need to be refrigerated?

No. The live cultures are protected with a patented microencapsulation technology. The probiotic cultures are coated with a protective layer that withstands not only heat, but also stomach acid.

What is the shelf life of Biolever® probiotic formulas?

Biolever® probiotics are good for at least 18 months from the date of manufacture as long as the package remains sealed. For best results, store in a cool, dry location.

Where are Biolever® probiotics manufactured?

All our formulas are manufactured in the United States, in a GMP and NSF certified facility.

Are Biolever® probiotics FDA approved?

Biolever® probiotics are regulated under DSHEA, the Dietary Supplement and Health Education Act. Probiotics do not require pre-market approval by the FDA, but manufacturers are required to adhere to the regulations governing Good Manufacturing Practices. We encourage you to research probiotic products before buying. Common problems with widely available probiotic supplements include poor survival of living cultures (on the shelf or in the stomach), or inclusion of strains that are not clinically researched.

How are Biolever® probiotics protected from humidity?

In order to prevent premature activation of the living probiotic cultures, moisture and humidity must be avoided. While many probiotic manufacturers package them in plastic for cost and convenience reasons, it is not ideal; plastic is not completely moisture-proof. Biolever® probiotics are packaged in aluminum foil sachets, which offer 100% protection from moisture and humidity.

Should Biolever® probiotics be taken with food?

No, but they can be. Take your probiotic supplement when it’s most convenient for you, with or without food. Biolever® uses Probiocap® technology that protects the live cultures in their transit through the stomach. They won’t cause stomach upset if you take them on an empty stomach, and they won’t be any less effective if you take them with food. We suggest you get into the habit of taking your probiotic at the same time each day.

How can I be sure my body will react well to probiotics?

Probiotics have been residing in the human gut since mankind first walked the earth. Without friendly bacteria, you could not survive. However, in some cases, an individual’s gut flora is so unbalanced that a probiotic may initially cause digestive or other symptoms. These are temporary, and should pass in a few days or, in rare cases, a few weeks. If you prefer to ease into probiotic use, start by taking one every few days and work up to a daily dose.

Can I take probiotics with other supplements?

Yes. Your gut already contains abundant bacteria, so any friendly bacteria you add to it can only help. One of the benefits of probiotics is that they can help to improve digestion and absorption of anything you consume, including vitamins, minerals, enzymes, herbal formulas, and other supplements.

Can I take multiple Biolever® formulas at the same time?

Yes. Not only is it safe, but it adds more diversity to your gut bacteria. Diversity of friendly bacteria is important, since different strains offer different health benefits.
